The short answer

Lactic acid is a larger AHA molecule than glycolic, so it penetrates less deeply — making it gentler and less irritating. Also uniquely hydrating. Effective at 5-10% for daily use. Best starter AHA for sensitive skin.

The AHA that’s gentler than glycolic and hydrates while exfoliating.

How lactic acid works

The short answer

Lactic acid is a larger molecule than glycolic, so it works on the upper stratum corneum without deep penetration. Uniquely, it increases ceramide synthesis in the barrier while exfoliating — the only AHA that hydrates as it works.

Lactic vs glycolic:

  • Lactic — gentler, hydrating, slower results
  • Glycolic — stronger, can be drying, faster results
