Skincare Routine Order: When to Apply What

The exact order for morning and evening skincare — including retinoids, vitamin C, sunscreen, red light, and the timing nobody tells you about.

Apply skincare from thinnest to thickest: cleanser → toner (optional) → water-based serum → oil-based serum → moisturizer → sunscreen (morning only). Retinoids go before moisturizer. Red light therapy goes on clean, dry skin before anything else.

Order matters more than most products. The same ingredients applied in the wrong sequence can reduce efficacy by 30-50% or actively cause irritation.

Layer skincare from thinnest to thickest consistency. Thin watery products absorb first; thicker creams trap them. Each layer should be mostly dry before applying the next, with 2-5 minutes between for actives like retinoids.

The combinations to avoid

The short answer

Never layer: retinoids + exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA), retinoids + vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide + retinoids (deactivates the retinoid), or more than one exfoliating product per night. These combos cause irritation with no added benefit.

Bad combos:

  • Retinoid + AHA/BHA → over-exfoliation, barrier damage
  • Retinoid + vitamin C at the same time → neither works as well
  • Benzoyl peroxide + tretinoin → BP oxidizes and deactivates tretinoin
  • Multiple actives same night → just pick one

Safe combos:

  • Retinoid (PM) + vitamin C (AM) — perfect pairing, different times of day
  • Hyaluronic acid + anything — water-based, plays nicely
  • Niacinamide + anything — barrier-friendly always

The tretinoin sandwich method

The tretinoin sandwich method: moisturizer → retinoid → moisturizer. The two moisturizer layers cut irritation 40-60% without reducing efficacy. Works with any retinoid, not just tretinoin.

For retinoid-reactive skin, modified order:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Wait 10-15 min (skin fully dry)
  3. Moisturizer layer 1 (thin)
  4. Wait 5 min
  5. Retinoid (pea-sized)
  6. Wait 5-10 min
  7. Moisturizer layer 2

Where red light therapy fits

Red light therapy sessions go on clean, dry skin before any products. Apply nothing beforehand except optionally a mineral sunscreen-free tint mask. After the session, follow your normal morning or evening routine.

The red light slot:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Dry skin completely
  3. Red light session (10 min)
  4. Continue with normal routine

Products before red light block the photons from reaching your skin. Even water droplets scatter some light.

Weekly additions

Optional weekly additions: hydrating mask (1x), clay mask (1x for oily skin), exfoliating acid (2x on non-retinoid nights). Skip all of these if you’re on a full retinoid protocol — the retinoid already exfoliates.

Weekly treatments:

  • Hydration mask (Sunday night, if you skipped retinoid)
  • Clay mask (once weekly, oily skin only)
  • AHA/BHA (only on non-retinoid nights; max 2x/week)

If you’re on tretinoin nightly, skip all three. Your skin is already getting plenty of turnover.
